The 46 High Peaks Workshop
For nearly 6 decades, Grace Hudowalski personally guided the Adirondack climbing community through the high peaks, beginning in the early years as a member of the 46rs of Troy guiding friends to the high peaks, and then after the broader based club was formed in 1948, receiving and responding personally to hundreds, and in later years thousands, of letters annually, keeping meticulous and detailed records for each climber in her role as 46er Historian. Grace got to know each climber personally, sharing in their journey, and offering guidance, valuable information on trail-conditions, routes, and her legendary encouragement. Scouring thousands of letters, Grace became both an encyclopedia and a veritable who’s who for the climbing community in the last half of the 20th century.
Filling a critical information void and very much in keeping with Grace’s legacy the ADK 46 High Peaks Workshop takes aspiring high peaks climbers through the unique history, cultural heritage, and traditions of the 46ers, offering up-to-date information on equipment, routes, safety, ethics and etiquette, and parking. “Everything you need to know but were afraid to ask about hiking the 46 High Peaks in New York State.”
In 2021, the Trust awarded ADK a 5-year grant in the sum of $25,000 ($5,000 annually) to support the program.
